Instructor: Mrs. Najjum
Library skills are taught to all grade levels every five days. The library skills period is 45 minutes which includes check out of books. Teachers may also request extra lessons during the six day cycle. Books may be checked out for a two week period. Our library is open for check out everyday. In a one month period we check out over 4,000 books. Mrs. Wehmeyer, the library media assistant, provides terrific support for the library program. We are grateful for many parent volunteers who lend their time and talents.
Library Announcements
Successful Book Fair
Our Successful Book Fair 2009

We are pleased to announce the total sales of our book fair last October. Our grand total of sales was $6,975.39.   Last year we totaled about $6,000, so we were very happy with the increased sales of about $1,000.  Mrs. Wehmeyer had contacted other libraries to get ideas on how to increase our profits. It looks like her efforts paid off because we had very few “out of stock” reorders on the books, and our customers were very happy with the selection. The library will receive $395.60 worth of new books from the fair at a cost of only $23.50 . We will also have $1,743.85  to spend this year, which reflects 25% of the profits. We are planning to spend more money on library books from other publishers. Thank you to all the parents, teachers, staff, and students who helped support the book fair with their purchases, and assistance with our project.

Our Family Night contest of “Guess the Number of Fortune Cookies” was quite popular with Antietam families. We had a three way tie for the correct answer of fifteen cookies. The winners were Katie D. in Mrs. Watt’s class, Victorio S. from Mrs. Blenner’s class and Malik W. from Mrs. Claussen’s class. Each of them received a package of international cookies, one third of the fortune cookies and a free poster from our book fair.

We had many book fair raffle winners too. The Scholastic Book Fair company sent us some free books to use as prizes. These students won a free book: Caesar M., Denicha R., Julissa C., Mauricio H., Kevin P., Linda A., Dave N., Edwin R., Amine F., Christin C., Katherine R., Alexandria R., Amberly P., Rashaun B., Jermiah G., Krisean B., Emmauel N., Gemirye W., Khrie R., Zai D., Keshira S., Jose L., Daniela R., Haddy I.,  Maryam B., Michael C., Tenasia G., Katherine H., and Hector A..

The fair would not have been a success without the help of our many volunteers who were coordinated by Mrs. Wehmeyer, the library media assistant. These people generously donated their time and energy by serving as cashiers, setting up and taking down the fair, putting up posters, helping parents and students with purchases, dressing up as Curious George, and other assigned duties. A tremendous thank you to Tricia Hathaway, Janet Morrison, Pam Kraynak, Eleanor Santiago, Juyang Kim, Mezeline Lindor, Yvette Teister, Ji Yu, Robin Hartshorn, Lori Zylich, Judy Och, Wendy Stroup, Samantha Sullivan, Linda harra, Kristy Galvan, Alicai Raconni, Meredith Martin, Karen Spanbauer, Heather David, Tami Chaffee, Tera Peacock, Scott and Tami Chaffee, Annette Salmon, Joanne Brown, Kendal Brown, Kelly Hill, Amy Forrest, Angela Barnedo, Jeanne Peters, Jane Bear, Diane Clark, Jolene Houston, Mrs. Williamson, Fauzia Omar, Rich Starr, Barbara Leiby and Gerri Misencik.
Mission Statement
Prince William County Schools Library Program Mission Statement

School libraries are essential to the development of students as life-long learners and library users. In Prince William County, school libraries support the educational goals of our school system and serve all students, teachers, and members of the school community. In mission, structure, and practice, they serve as the center of the school's instructional process.

The school library provides opportunities for the use of "real world" information and technology through access to resources and individual service. Library instruction that is meaningful, relevant, and integrated contributes to student proficiency in basic skills and problem solving. Students using a variety of library resources broaden their understanding and respect for the diversity of individuals and cultures. Because the school library is a shared resource owned and used by every member of the school community, it provides a learning environment that fosters good citizens who function effectively as members of a group and of society.

My Autobiography
I have worked in Prince William County Schools since I graduated from George Mason in 1974. I have been a librarian at Antietam Elementary since it was founded in 1990. I am a long time Woodbridge resident, so I have seen many changes in my community. I have attended Prince William County Schools since my childhood. I was delighted when my son and daughter attended Antietam Elementary many years ago. Now they are grown, but I still feel like I have family at Antietam. Antietam parents and children will wave and say hello, as I take my daily dog walks around the neighborhood. I enjoy working with the friendly teachers, and professional Antietam staff . Your librarian, June Najjum
